A Successful Week to be a Selwynite

Posted by Thomas Heaton on Sunday, August 14, 2011 / 0 Comments

Over the past few days, we have had a great run of events.

As stated in my last post, we had the annual Somerville Shield rugby game. We won convincingly 32-13. It was an amazing atmosphere in the stadium, I was so proud and overwhelmed when we won.

But, in the past week we have had a cultural and sporting event against Knox College.

The first of the two events was the choir competition. Both small and big choirs did extremely well, and turned a tide that must have lasted 5 years. Both won convincingly and, everyone, including Exie community and Knox itself were astounded at the quality of our singers.

The second, was a long and almost one sided billiards tournament. Our team showed their skill and won 650-370 points and ended after almost 5 hours of playing. This event was a great win, as after the rugby, we are now in the lead of the Cameron shield, and with winning choir, we are on even points for the Nevill Cup (Which we haven't won since 2007).

Somerville Rugby Shield

The new rugby stadium, Forsyth-Barr will be having official opening this friday, the 5th of august.

As a part of the opening, Selwyn College will be gracing the field for it's first ever match. Every year, our boys go out and play with pride, passion and show what true deication is. We have had 106 years of battles between Knox and Selwyn College, and for the 107th, we will be playing in the grandest of amphitheatres that possibly either college has played in.

There is a massive buzz going around the college, everyone is exited about the prospect of winning the first ever match of rugby in the stadium. I can assure anyone who is reading this, the boys will be giving their all, blood and sweat included.

I will speak on behalf of all the students and say, I CAN'T WAIT!

Between Semesters

Posted by Thomas Heaton on Monday, June 27, 2011 / 0 Comments

The semester has offically ended! People were sure to celebrate the end of all their exams by having a few drinks at the end of exams. After a few days, the college is empty, and many are at home catching up with family and old friends... whilst I myself am enjoying the winter festival in queenstown with my brother!

First Half: Success

Posted by Thomas Heaton on Friday, April 22, 2011 / 0 Comments

Its now Easter time. The first half of the semester is over, and a well deserved break for everyone is here.

Nevill cup has started, with an unfortunate loss in the debating, and a very entertaining tie in the theatre sports competition. Athletics is coming soon, and the coaches and athletes are ready and raring to go and hopefully getting ready for a win.

This combined with work and other extra curricular activities created a hectic start of the year... but now... we rest

Whether people are going home to see family, or staying down in Dunedin to have some rest and recuperation.

So, I myself, will follow and have some rest, and get ready for an exiting end of semester!

Until next time,

Thomas

Swimming/Knox Powhiri

Posted by Thomas Heaton on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 / 0 Comments

Last night marked one of the most memorable occasions for all of the students in Selwyn College.

We competed in the second event of what we call The Cameron Shield: The swimming. It marks a time when competition is fierce, fast, and very exiting to watch and to be a part of. Both the girls and boys proved their swimming prowess by winning convincingly in both relays. They were greatly supported by the Selwyn girls in the grandstand, cheering them on with the traditional Selwyn chants.

Not only is it a time for great competition between the colleges sporting wise, but it is also a time when both colleges face off in the Haka for the first time. The boys gave it their all and truly did the history, tradition, their coaches and their Kaia proud. The Haka was followed by the traditional stare down against the Knox boys. All things compounded together, made this event extremely intense.

This event was followed by a late night Powhiri in the Selwyn Quad. The girls revealed their Waiata and did so with great pride and respect. With speakers from both colleges, the event was a great way to formally start the Cameron Shield and Nevill cup competitions. This was followed by some great food provided by the Selwyn catering staff and a lot of socialising between the colleges before saying goodbye and going to bed after a very long and tiring.

I say in all of my blogs... "It looks like we are set for a great year!"... But, now, I know it is time for a change.

Because, this year is going to be great. Lasting friendships will be made not only within the colleges, but also, between them.

Until next time...

Great Start to Cameron Shield

Posted by Thomas Heaton on Thursday, March 24, 2011 / 0 Comments

The past Sunday was a great day.

Possibly the best way to start off the year: Winning the first Cameron Shield event. The Boys played exceedingly well, and defeated Knox college in cricket.

The exitement from a great win compounding with the revealing of the Haka/Waiata on Sunday night, then the upcoming swimming competition is making a great buzz within the walls of Selwyn.

Watch this space for (hopefully!) updates on wins soon!

All Welcome In Selwyn

Has been a great past couple of weeks, and everything is now settling down, and everyone is getting back into the rhythm of university life. Has been a great few weeks of parties and get togethers, with people dressed in ranges of different things. People dressed as cowboys, romans, horses, and sheep: has been exiting and a whole lot of fun!

But, O-Week has come and gone now. New students and returners alike have gotten to know each other, and all is on the way for a great year!

The Exie community has officially been welcomed into the college with our annual BBQ. All have been introduced, and everyone has caught up. Its really great to finally have such a vital part of community back with us.

There is certainly a feeling within the college that this year is going to be the same in many ways, but the new students are going to bring some new and exiting things to the plate.

I know I can really speak for everyone when I say that this year is going to be incredible.
